Songs

Sarah’s Farewell
Sop. Soloist-1-Flute, 1- Eng.Hn & Low Strings

Lyric Sample: My father used to work this land, he was a tenant farmer. He used to take me by the hand we’d walk these fields together. I’d reach for stars and touch the moon when in his arms he’d hold me, but now he says we’re leaving soon, my heart grows cold and lonely. And I am so afraid….and I am so afraid to go.

Southern Cross – A Lullaby
S 1 Flute 1 Harp

Lyric Sample: There’s a light in the distant darkenss tonight. Soon we’ll be there, tomorrow I swear. May the fire in your heart and eyes be as bright. This my silent prayer. So rest baby rest, by the Shining be blest, never in shadows lost. This one holy candle is guiding us on, under the Southern Cross.

Edwin’s Song
Baritone Soloist

Chorus: Across the line, around Cape Horn , there’s people dyin, people born , aboard the Marco Polo…

I Departure

Lyric Sample: My name is Edwin Bird and a merchant man am I. I left the Salt House dock, it was March of 53. I said farewell to England’s shores and took the Marco Polo on a voyage to Australia where fortune beckoned me.

II Underway

Lyric Sample: We ran 12 knots off Holly ead our second day with every lady on Board sick and many of the men. On Wednesday it turned to calm and later in the evening there was dancing , there was singing and the band played once again.

III Troubles on Board

Lyric Sample: We started up a paper to be issued once a week. It caused dissatisfaction, cause it pointed out some blame. A sailor on the 21st was roped because of stealing. For a little rum filled bottle, the mate had spoiled his game.

IV Hope Renewed

Lyric Sample: We reached the famed Equator, it was hot on April twelfth. With music, wine and champagne and the passengers in white.
We went through squalls near Rio’s coast and on the 22nd we passed th Cape in slack breeze with flying fish in sight.

V Arrival

(lyric sample) On Saturday the twenty eighth, we finally saw a light. A pilot came on board next day when we went through the reach.
