Edwin’s Song : 5 Movements
The following 5 excerpts one from each of the 5 movements .
The story of a voyage to Australia on the Marco Polo .
Edwin’s Song I: Departure
My name is Edwin Bird and a merchantman am I
I left the Salt House Dock. It was March of ’53.
I bade farewell to England’s charms and took the Marco Polo,
on a voyage to Australia where fortune beckoned me.

Edwin’s Song II: Underway
We ran 12 knots off Holy head our second day at sea
With every lady on board sick and many of the men.
On Wednesday it turned to calm
and later in the evening
There was dancing, there was singing.
The band played once again.

Edwin’s Song III: Underway
We started up a paper to be issued once a week.
It caused dissatisfaction, as it pointed out some blame.
A sailor on the 21st was roped because of stealing.
For a little rum filled bottle , the mate had spoiled his game.

Edwin’s Song IV: Hope Renewed
We reached the famed Equator it was hot on April twelfth. With music, wine & champagne and the passengers in white. We went through squalls near Rio’s coast and on the 22nd,
we passed the Cape in slack breeze with flying fish in sight.

Edwin’s Song: V Arrival
On Saturday the 28th we finally saw a light
A pilot came on board next day, when we went through the reach.
Then Hobson’s Bay by 2 o’clock and all on board were cheering. And Melbourne lay before us, with tents all on the beach.

(SO + Vocal Trio+ Eng.Hn + Fr.Hn)

Sarah’s Farewell
Mezzo Soprano Solo
Flute, Clarinet ,Bass Clarinet
Viola, Cello,& Contrabass
My father used to work the land, he was a tenant farmer.
He used to take me by the hand, we’d walk the fields together. I’d reach for stars and touch the moon when in his arms he’d hold me but now he says we’re leaving soon my heart grows cold and lonely…And I am so afraid…and I am so afraid to go.

Sarah’s Farewell
Soprano Solo
Viola, Cello & Contrabass, Flute,
English Horn, Fr. Horn in F
My father used to work the land, he was a tenant farmer.
He used to take me by the hand, we’d walk the fields together.
I’d reach for stars & touch the moon when in his arms he’d hold me
But now he says we’re leaving soon. My heart grows cold and lonely.
And I am so afraid, and I am so afraid to go.

Southern Cross– A Lullaby
A Lullaby
(Mezzo Soprano soloist + Flute, Harp, VA.,VC., CB)
There’s a light in the distant darkness tonight.
Soon we’ll be there, tomorrow I swear, May the fire in our heart and eyes be as bright . This is my silent prayer.
So rest, baby rest, by the shining be blest...
To the Ends of the Earth
(SO)+Baritone Soloist
They came from the whole world over, drawn to this lonely shore. These scattered and driven exiles, aching for something more. Through darkness and flight, through long winters night they clung to this rugged space. By reaching for each new promise, carving a home and place.

To the Ends of the Earth
Baritone Solo & SATB Chorus
(SO+ Brass Choir)
(The same lyrics as in the SO+ Baritone version above)

We Built this Old Ship
Bass-Baritone Soloist & Male Chorus
(SO + Harp & Brass)
(Intro: Bass Baritone solo a cappella; Verse 1 & Chorus)
Verse 1: first half
We gathered the tamarack, oak , birch and pine.
We took from the forest and took to the shore
nd we gave her her breath and her strength and her line,
with the skills we had learned from our fathers before...
Chorus:
We built this old ship with our sweat and endeavor.
She ran with the wind and the wind set her free.
And we once dared to dream she would sail on forever.
But although she was ours, she belonged to the sea.
